A plum is a fruit of the sub genus  prunus  of the genus prunus.
The sub genus is distinguished from other sub genera in the shoots having terminal bud and solitary side buds, the flowers in groups of one to five together on short stems, and the fruit having a groove running down one side and a smooth stone.

VARIETIES OF PLUMS:

1.  BLACK PLUMS

Black plums usually range from bright red to deep purple color and come with a mild to sweet taste. Typically, they are used in dishes such as plum tarts as they don’t fall apart when baked or cooked. This helps give the dish more a come-together appearance and texture.

 2. RED PLUMS

Red plums are available with a sweet-tart flavor that can increase your mineral and vitamin intake while giving you a dose of excellent antioxidants at the same time.

The skin color of red plums varies from light red to dark purple. Like its skin, the flesh also differs as some are red in color while others in lighter tones of yellow. The yellow-fleshed red plums are more nutrient-ridden than the red-fleshed ones.

3. YELLOW PLUMS

Also known as lemon plums, yellow plums are relatively smaller and rounder variety of plums that possess both yellow skin and flesh. With a crisp and firm texture, these fruits are juicy and provide maximum quality of plumpness to the consumer. These delicious fruits can be ideally picked in late summers to early autumns.

Generally, yellow plums are used for making dessert pies, jams, fruit preserves, juices, and plum brandy. It is used for jams or fruit brandy.

4. European  Italian Plums (Prunus domestica)

Prunus domestica, the European plum is a species of flowering plant in the family Rosaceae. A deciduous tree, it includes many varieties of the fruit trees known as plums in English, though not all plums belong to this species. The greengages and damsons also belong to subspecies of P. domestica. The edible pulp is usually sweet (dessert plum), though some varieties are sour and require cooking with sugar to make them palatable. Like all prunus  fruits, it contains a single large seed, usually called a stone, which is discarded when eating.

5. Moyer Plums :

Moyer  is high yielding with large oval fruit with orange flesh. Fruit can be sun-dried or dried in a dehydrator. 

6. Greengage Plums

The greengages are a group of cultivars of the common European plum. The first true greengage came from a green-fruited wild plum originated in Iran. This  is the finest dessert plums.

7.Mirabelle Plums

Mirabelle plum, also known as mirabelle prune or cherry plum, is a cultivar group of plum trees of the genus Prunus. It is believed that the plum was cultivated from a wild fruit grown in Anatolia. 

8. PLUOTS

This fruits are a member of the stone fruit family. There are hybrid fruit developed 75 % plums & 25% apricot. They resemble plums with smooth skin and a similar shape and texture.
